I have a post that’s been sitting in my drafts folder for two months that I keep thinking about. Occasionally I’ll open it, give it a read, and decide again to let it sit. Sometimes ideas need to congeal for a while, and sometimes they’re better left alone. Sometimes I even write whole pieces never intending to publish. In those instances the writing is more about hitting the release valve on my emotions without the need to share the words with anyone other than myself.
Which has led me to conclude that my writing is as much for me as it is for you or anyone who may come to read it. By the process of writing I’m forced to think and feel more deeply and sus out the core of what I really want to say so that it can be conveyed clearly and compellingly. And if I can’t boil it down and get it crystal clear than I don’t publish. The whole process is an exercise in checking my thinking.
Am I just having an internal rant about something that’s bugging me? Am I deeply curious about a concept I haven’t yet been able to articulate? Is it something I’ve been wrestling with and I’m seeking clarity? Sometimes it’s all of the above.
Everything is energy and everything and everyone is connected. That’s what I’m ruminating on now and most of the time. Our physicists have repeatedly proven the first point through verifiable experimentation. And the second point has been hashed over for a few thousand years of storytelling in the mediums of theater, film, lyrics, poetry, and literature — illustrating in often inspiring and beautiful ways that nothing meaningful gets done unless we do it together.
But we have reverse blinders. We have blinders that block the view in front of us and reveal only the elements on the periphery. We’re all connected and our need for each other is right in front of us, but instead we see confusion of human activity and the illusion of separation. And I’m beginning to think that modern life is counter-productive to human existence.
