EP 1. Life is Not as Long as You Think

Things won’t be as bad as you think if you leave a job that doesn’t suit your soul
4

This is our inaugural episode of The Great Resignation Uncensored — a podcast series at the DEEPER side of things. We will continue to publish blog format articles in addition to this series. We don’t necessarily know where The Great Resignation Uncensored will go, we just know it’s an important topic and feel excited and honored to share the individual stories of those who have resigned.

This episode’s guest goes by the name of Roshawn. Her, as well as some of our future guests, are asking for anonymity. In some cases, we are changing their names or using first names only. We are not referencing company names. It’s not about outing anyone. It’s about hearing the stories of those who have experienced such things as toxic work cultures, harassment, prejudice, lack of inclusion, and ethical conflicts. We seek to honor their stories and offer some perspective on this important change in our broader culture.

Roshawn is an accomplished executive with a long career in sales and business development. She’s been a top producing saleswoman at every place she’s worked, she takes her work seriously, and has a deep desire to do good in the world — to make a positive difference.

One of the more powerful quotes from her interview is, “Leaving this job was more meaningful than anything I ever did in my career — to say no to injustice.”

As we listened to her story unfold, the big reveal was how much of the way she was treated was related to her race, something she experienced all throughout her career.

But there was something deeply inspiring to her story too. When asked what advice she might wish to share with others on the fence about leaving their jobs she said, “Life is not as long as you think, and things won’t be as bad as you think if you left a job that doesn’t suit your soul.”

We had no idea what she was going to share going into the interview, and even though we know the Great Resignation is largely about how people are mistreated in the workplace, it’s still a little jarring to hear that a woman would be treated poorly merely because of her race.

I want to believe that humanity is better than this, that we’ve risen above it, that our consciousness has evolved. And in truth, human consciousness is evolving. The Great Resignation is a reflection of that. 20 years ago, people were not so willing to leave jobs with the appearance of “success” with no place to go when they felt their soul crushing under the weight of injustice. But today this is precisely what is occurring, as millions are resigning every month.

The Great Resignation Uncensored
24 million people resigned between April and September of 2021. The narrative is that people just don’t want to work, but the research is telling a different story.
Bad cultures and bad bosses are the number one reason people are leaving, as well as a feeling of lack of inclusion and ethics.
In this series we're sharing the stories of those who have resigned, often without any financial safety net. They’re not seeking lateral moves with other companies but choosing out of the traditional workforce altogether.
With this podcast, we’re creating a mosaic of changing culture through the telling of individual stories.
