Fusion Energy is Not the Panacea We Think It Is
We have all the knowledge, expertise, and technology right now — we don’t need a stadium-sized mega-plant to save the day
There’s been a lot of positive press afforded to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory announcement of a net positive energy produced from their fusion reactor. A reactor 60 years in the making and the size of a sports stadium. Its complexity is staggering, and yet the mere fact that the nanosecond reaction produced a little more energy than it took to produce is being hailed as hope for the future.
I think not. Lawrence Livermore Lab is a government owned laboratory operated by a consortium of organizations involved in nuclear energy and weaponry, all of which operate on the age-old paradigm of large is better.
