The Navajo people have a tradition that men go first. On the surface it would seem as though they are a patriarchal culture, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. For the Navajo, men go first to make sure it is safe for the women to follow. The same value is held and practiced by many indigenous cultures, as reflected by the Cherokee proverb, “The role of the woman is to lead man to source, while the role of the man is to protect woman so she may walk the Earth unharmed.”
In these cultures women are seen as the more spiritually evolved gender, and therefore it is up to the men to protect them so the women can in turn help the men progress spiritually. I often find this to be true in my life with Maria, and I’ve heard men speaking in various men’s groups of their wives being more intuitive and wise. It doesn’t mean that men are worthless brutes capable of little more than physical protection, but rather that such cultural traditions honors women as the way finders of a more spiritual existence. It reminds men to listen to the women so that they may be shown the way.
